Erect dense, leafless shrub, 0.5-2.5 m high. Fl. red/red-orange, Jul to Nov. Red or yellow sand, clay, limestone. Near salt lakes, limestone ridges & cliffs, granite rocks.

Scientific Description

Erect, shrub, spindly shrub (broom-like). Stems flattened, not spiny, glabrous; pustules or glands absent. Leaves or phylloclades absent or apparently so (reduced to scales), alternate, not continuous with stem, hairy, with simple hairs, flat with flat margins; margins entire; tubercles absent; pustules or glands absent. Stipules present and persistent to older leaves. Pedicel present, 4-6 mm long, glabrous. Bracteoles 1-1.2 mm long, hairy, not striate. Calyx 8-11 mm long, not accrescent, hairy, with simple hairs, ribless; pustules or glands absent. Corolla 20-24 mm long, multicoloured, red, mostly red or orange, with some red or orange spots, streaks or blotches; claws present; standard 13-17 mm long, glabrous, not auriculate, wings 15-16 mm long, not auriculate, keel 20-21 mm long, not beaked, not auriculate, glabrous. Stamens ten, at two different levels (filaments alternately long and short); filaments united in an open sheath, 15-17 mm long. Ovary stipitate, hairy or glandular; style 19-20 mm long, hairy or glandular towards the base, not bearded, terete. Fruit dehiscent (a pod or follicle), 35-52 mm long, 8-9 mm wide, stipitate, not constricted between the seeds, flat or compressed, glabrous, not beaked. Flowers in July, August, September, October and November. Occurs in the Eremaean and South-West Botanical Province, in the Carnarvon, Yalgoo, Murchison, Great Victorian Desert, Coolgardie, Avon Wheatbelt and Mallee IBRA regions.
