Tussock-forming perennial, grass-like or herb, 0.5-1.5 m high, glumes and lemma long-awned, spikelet of loose, relatively few florets. Fl. green-purple, Jul to Oct. Red, grey & calcareous sand. Dunes, sandplains, stony rises.
