Scientific Description

Habit and structure. Thallus with spherical, ovoid, clavate, pyriform or irregularly shaped cells 50–80 µm diam., scattered in the host cortex but connected by hyaline filaments 2–4 µm diam. Plastids numerous, 3–5 μm diam., each with a prominent pyrenoid.

Distribution. Widespread in temperate and tropical seas of the Northern Hemisphere, less commonly reported from the Southern Hemisphere.

Habitat. Endophytic in larger algae.
