Tussock-forming perennial, grass-like or herb, 0.4-1.5 m high, culms often purple, raceme spiciform, lemma dorsally rounded, 3-toothed. Fl. green-purple, May to Jul or Sep to Oct. Red to orange-brown sand, limestone, sandy loam. Sand dunes & steppes, often coastal areas, drainage basins, salt lakes.
