Plant of the Month — May 2013
Pithocarpa pulchella Lindl. var. pulchella
Two Western Australian species referred to the genus Ozothamnus in the past have been considered poorly aligned with that genus, but their alternative placement has been uncertain. Recent molecular studies have suggested that they are best placed in the Western Australian endemic genus Pithocarpa. Therefore the following new combinations have recently been made: Pithocarpa cordata and Pithocarpa ramosa.
Four species are now recognised in Pithocarpa including the ‘type’ species Pithocarpa pulchella which contains two subspecies. The more northerly, Pithocarpa pulchella var. pulchella, is included in a brief revision of this endemic genus by Barrett, Schmidt-Lebuhn and Thiele in our journal Nuytsia, from which much of this text is transcribed. The paper also includes a number of detailed colour plates, SEM images and a key to all taxa.
