Open, erect tuberous, perennial, herb, to 0.8 m high. Yellow-brown or black peaty or stony grey sand, brown-grey loam, brown-red sandy clay, ironstone, gravel, laterite, granite, quartz. Sand dunes, plains, uplands, valley slopes, ridges, hillsides, tracks.
