Rhizomatous, erect perennial, herb, 0.3-1.5 m high, male spikelets on long slender stalks; female spikelets 1-8-flowered, flowers with 2 style branches. Fl. brown, Jan or Mar or Jul to Nov. Peaty sand. Wet or seasonally wet sites.

Rhizomes tufted, hairy. Basal sheath glabrous, dull, striate. Culms flattened, internal structure (at base of culm) solid, glabrous, striate, not marbled, not fasciculate. Culm 330-710 mm long. Sheaths (including blade) appressed throughout, dull, striate, glabrous, margins not translucent. Apex elongated, glabrous. Dioecious (with separate male and female plants). Male and female inflorescences distinctly dissimilar, posture (male inflorescences only) Distinctly drooping, Culms unbranched below the inflorescence. Male spikelet 4-5.5 mm long. Subtending bract glabrous, Outer bract 2-3 mm long, margins firm and opaque, Apex acuminate to attenuate. Perianth glabrous. 2.5-3.2 mm long. Inner bract glabrous, margins firm and opaque, Apex acute. Inner bract 2.7-3 mm long. Filament 0.1-0.4 mm long. Anther 1.3-1.4 mm long. Female spikelet 4.8-6.5 mm long. Subtending bract glabrous, margins firm and opaque, Apex acute. Outer bract 2.2-3.1 mm long. Perianth glabrous. 2.4-3.2 mm long. Inner bracts 2.4-3.8 mm long, glabrous, margins firm and opaque, Apex acute. Style two (or two-branched). 2.7-3.7 mm long. Fruit bilocular (capsule).
