Rhizomatous, tufted perennial, herb, 0.2-0.5 m high, culms striate; male spikelets pendulous on slender branches; anthers not exserted. Fl. yellow-brown, Oct to Dec or Jan to May. Sand. Swamps and other moist or seasonally moist sites.

Rhizomes tufted, hairy. Basal sheath hairy, dull, striate. Culms terete, internal structure (at base of culm) hollow, glabrous, striate, not marbled, not fasciculate. Culm 110-500 mm long. Sheaths (including blade) appressed throughout, dull, striate, glabrous, margins not translucent. Apex finely pointed or elongated, glabrous. Dioecious (with separate male and female plants). Male and female inflorescences similar, posture (male inflorescences only) Distinctly drooping, Culms unbranched below the inflorescence. Male spikelet 7-8 mm long. Subtending bract glabrous, Outer bract 4.5-5 mm long, margins firm and opaque, Apex acuminate to attenuate. Perianth hairy. 3-3.2 mm long. Inner bract glabrous, margins firm and opaque, Apex acuminate to attenuate. Inner bract 5.5-5.8 mm long. Filament 0.3-1.5 mm long. Anther 1.5-1.7 mm long. Female spikelet 6-11 mm long. Subtending bract glabrous, margins firm and opaque, Apex acuminate to attenuate. Outer bract 3-7.5 mm long. Perianth hairy. 3.2-4.5 mm long. Inner bracts 4.2-7 mm long, glabrous, margins firm and opaque, Apex acuminate to attenuate. Style two (or two-branched). 4-6 mm long. Fruit bilocular (capsule).
