Gastrolobium celsianum (Lemaire) G.Chandler & Crisp

Scientific Description

Twining or climbing plants, shrub, spindly shrub (broom-like). Stems terete, not spiny, hairy; pustules or glands absent. Leaves or phylloclades clearly present, simple, opposite, not continuous with stem, 20-80 mm long, 10-30 mm wide, hairy, with simple hairs, flat with flat margins; margins entire; tubercles absent; pustules or glands absent. Stipules present and persistent to older leaves, 2-2.5 mm long, without glands, ribless. Pedicel present, 3-5 mm long, hairy. Bracteoles present but early deciduous. Calyx 13-15 mm long, not accrescent, hairy, with simple hairs, ribless; pustules or glands absent. Corolla 22-28 mm long, uniformly coloured, red; claws absent; standard 14.5-18 mm long, glabrous, not auriculate, wings 13-17 mm long, not auriculate, keel 21-27 mm long, not beaked, not auriculate, glabrous. Stamens ten; anthers 1.2-1.3 mm long, at two different levels (filaments alternately long and short); filaments free (or united at the very base), 19-26 mm long. Ovary sessile or subsessile, hairy or glandular; style 22-31 mm long, hairy or glandular towards the base, not bearded, terete. Fruit dehiscent (a pod or follicle), stipitate, not constricted between the seeds, round in cross-section, not beaked. Flowers in August, September, October and November. Occurs in the South-West Botanical Province, in the Avon Wheatbelt, Jarrah Forest, Mallee, Esperance and Swan Coastal Plain IBRA regions.
