Tangled, more or less prostrate shrub, to 0.6 m high. Fl. red-green, Aug to Dec. Sand, clay, laterite. Wet, boggy ground, ridges, disturbed areas.

Scientific Description

Twining or climbing plants. Stems terete, not spiny, hairy; pustules or glands absent. Leaves or phylloclades clearly present, simple, opposite, not continuous with stem, 22-45 mm long, 20-45 mm wide, hairy or glabrous, with simple hairs, flat with flat margins; margins entire; tubercles absent; pustules or glands absent. Stipules present and persistent to older leaves, 3.2-6 mm long, without glands, ribless. Pedicel present, 4-4.5 mm long, hairy. Bracteoles present but early deciduous. Calyx 10-15 mm long, not accrescent, hairy, with simple hairs, ribless; pustules or glands absent. Corolla 25-30 mm long, multicoloured, mostly red or green, with some red or green spots, streaks or blotches; claws absent, auriculate, wings 16-23 mm long, auriculate, keel 21-30 mm long, not beaked, not auriculate, glabrous. Stamens ten; anthers 1.2-1.7 mm long, at two different levels (filaments alternately long and short); filaments free (or united at the very base), 22-24 mm long. Ovary sessile or subsessile, hairy or glandular; style 25-32 mm long, hairy or glandular towards the base, not bearded, terete. Fruit dehiscent (a pod or follicle), stipitate, not constricted between the seeds, round in cross-section, not beaked. Flowers in August, September, October, November and December. Occurs in the South-West Botanical Province, in the Avon Wheatbelt, Jarrah Forest, Esperance and Swan Coastal Plain IBRA regions.
