Rhizomatous, perennial, herb or grass-like or (fern), 0.05-0.6 m high, fronds simple; sporangia-bearing segments in pinnately arranged `cock's comb'. Fl. Nov to Dec. Black, sandy peat. In wet moss mounds, among sedges and rushes on edges of swamps.
