Scientific Description

Habit and structure. Thallus filamentous, pale red, with a prostrate axis attached to the substratum by rhizoids arising from periaxial cells, and determinate erect axes to 1 mm tall which are mostly simple with straight apices. Axial cells of prostrate and erect axes 100–110 µm long, 30–35 µm diam. (including wall). Nodes discrete, 33–38 µm diam., with 4 periaxial cells, each producing 2 acropetal cells but no basipetal cells.

Reproduction. Spermatangia arising on distal nodes of erect axes, in whorls on nodal cells. Tetrasporangia borne unilaterally on periaxial cells, subspherical, to 35 µm diam., tetrahedrally divided, 1 or 2 sequentially developing sporangia per node, with involucral filaments subtending and covering 20–50% of the sporangium. Other reproductive structures not observed.

Distribution. Occurs in Bermuda and the Florida Keys, U.S.A. Commonly reported from tropical seas.
