Scientific Description

Habit and structure. Thallus with prostrate and erect axes, the latter growing to a height of 1–2 mm. Prostrate axes with cells 90–110 µm diam. [L:B 2–3], attached by unicellular rhizoids with digitate pads. Erect axes with opposite lateral branches, the successive pairs rotated slightly; cells of erect axes 50–100 µm diam., gradually tapering from base to apex of the filament; apical cells 10–15 µm diam. Laterals initially overtopping the apical cell, becoming generally 3 cells long and branched once pseudodichotomously at the basal cell, with cells 30–45 µm diam. and with pointed apices.

Reproduction. Reproductive structures not seen.

Distribution. Known from Western Australia, South Africa and Samoa.

Habitat. generally epiphytic in the subtidal.
