Prostrate annual, herb, 0.04-0.1 m high, leaves ovate-lanceolate to spathulate, 4-70 mm long, 2-35 mm wide; spikes green-white, ovoid or cylindrical, 7-40 mm long, 7-14 mm diam; tepals 4-6 mm long apex entire, acute, hairs verticillate; stamens 3 fertile, staminodes 2; ovary hairy throughout; style straight. Fl. white-cream-green-pink, Apr to Oct. Often on stony, red sandy loam. Common in open plains.
Scientific Description
Annuals, stems several, more or less prostrate, persistently hairy or glabrescent, with verticillate hairs. Leaves present, 4-70 mm long, 2-35 mm wide, glabrescent, with nodose or verticillate hairs; basal rosette present; cauline leaves alternate. Spikes green or brown, ovoid or cylindrical, clustered, with densely arranged flowers. Bracts 3.2-5 mm long, coloured, hairy, not awned or mucronate, with an obscure midrib. Bracteoles 3.5-4.5 mm long, colourless, hairy, not awned or mucronate, with an obscure midrib. Outer tepals 4.2-5.3 mm long, entire. Inner tepals 4-4.6 mm long, glabrous within. Style 0.4-0.6 mm long, curved or straight, centrally fixed to ovary. Seeds (1-)1.1-1.2(-1.3) mm long, glossy, brown.
