Scientific Description

Habit and structure. Thallus bushy, to 9 cm tall, deep red to brownish, irregularly branched, attached by a discoid holdfast and sometimes secondary holdfasts. Primary axes 250–350 µm broad [segment L:B 0.8–1.1], tapering to c. 150 µm near apices [segment L:B 0.3–0.5]. Determinate lateral branches to 300–600 µm long, corymbose, with acute apices and numerous simple trichoblasts. Structure uniaxial, with 4 pericentral cells, ecorticate. Trichoblasts to 1 mm long, basally with several short cells but primarily composed of elongate cells, 250–500 µm long, 20–25 µm diam.

Reproduction. Reproductive structures not observed.

Distribution. Widely distributed in the tropical Indian and western Pacific Oceans.
