Erect pungent shrub, 0.5-1.5 m high. Fl. yellow & brown/red, Jul to Aug. Sandy & clayey soils. Salt lake margins, granite hills, dunes.

Scientific Description

Erect, shrub, spindly shrub (broom-like). Stems terete, spiny at least in part, glabrous; pustules or glands absent. Leaves or phylloclades clearly present, simple, alternate, not continuous with stem, 3-9 mm long, 1-2 mm wide, hairy, with simple hairs, flat with flat margins; margins entire; tubercles absent; pustules or glands absent. Stipules present and persistent to older leaves. Pedicel present, 9-10 mm long, hairy. Bracteoles 1.3-1.8 mm long, hairy, not striate. Calyx 4.5-6 mm long, not accrescent, hairy, with simple hairs, ribless; pustules or glands absent. Corolla 8.5-10 mm long, multicoloured, mostly yellow, red or brown, with some yellow, red or brown spots, streaks or blotches; claws present; standard 8-9.6 mm long, glabrous, not auriculate, wings 6-6.7 mm long, not auriculate, keel 8-8.4 mm long, not beaked, not auriculate, hairy at least in part. Stamens ten, at two different levels (filaments alternately long and short); filaments united in an open sheath, 6-8 mm long. Ovary stipitate, hairy or glandular; style 9.4-9.8 mm long, hairy or glandular towards the base, not bearded, terete. Fruit dehiscent (a pod or follicle), 15-17 mm long, 4-5 mm wide, stipitate, not constricted between the seeds, flat or compressed, glabrous, not beaked. Flowers in July and August. Occurs in the South-West Botanical Province, in the Mallee and Esperance IBRA regions.
