Erect or spreading shrub, (0.15-)0.3-1 m high. Fl. red & orange, Aug to Dec (mainly 9-10). Sandy gravelly soils, clay loam. Rocky hillsides, lateritic ridges, undulating places.

Scientific Description

Erect or prostrate,spreading or scrambling, shrub, spindly shrub (broom-like). Stems terete, spiny at least in part, hairy; pustules or glands absent. Leaves or phylloclades clearly present, simple, alternate, not continuous with stem, 6-18 mm long, 2.2-6 mm wide, hairy, with simple hairs, flat with flat margins; margins entire; tubercles absent; pustules or glands absent. Pedicel present, 4-6 mm long, hairy. Bracteoles present and persistent or present but early deciduous, 3-4.5 mm long, hairy, not striate. Calyx 8.5-10 mm long, not accrescent, hairy, with simple hairs, ribless; pustules or glands absent. Corolla 14-17.5 mm long, multicoloured, mostly yellow, red or orange, with some red or orange spots, streaks or blotches; claws present; standard 13-15 mm long, glabrous, not auriculate, wings 10-11 mm long, not auriculate, keel 9-10.5 mm long, not beaked, not auriculate, glabrous. Stamens ten; anthers 0.7 mm long, at two different levels (filaments alternately long and short); filaments free (or united at the very base), 6.5-10 mm long. Ovary hairy or glandular; style 9-12.5 mm long, hairy or glandular towards the base, bearded (with a tuft of hairs at apex), terete. Fruit dehiscent (a pod or follicle), 8-10 mm long, 5-6 mm wide, stipitate, not constricted between the seeds, round in cross-section, hairy, with simple hairs, not beaked. Flowers in August, September, October, November and December. Occurs in the South-West Botanical Province, in the Avon Wheatbelt, Jarrah Forest and Esperance IBRA regions.
