Erect or straggling shrub, (0.2-)0.4-1.4 m high. Fl. orange/yellow & red, Sep to Nov. Gravelly sandy or clayey soils. Sandplains, low rises, hillslopes.
Scientific Description
Erect or prostrate,spreading or scrambling, shrub, spindly shrub (broom-like). Stems terete, spiny at least in part or not spiny, hairy; pustules or glands absent. Leaves or phylloclades absent or apparently so (reduced to scales), alternate, not continuous with stem, hairy, with simple hairs, flat with flat margins; margins dentate; tubercles absent, 0.5-2; pustules or glands absent. Stipules apparently absent even from the youngest leaves. Pedicel present, 3-4.5 mm long, hairy. Bracteoles present and persistent, 1-3 mm long, hairy, not striate. Calyx 15.5-16 mm long, not accrescent, hairy, with simple hairs, ribless; pustules or glands absent. Corolla 16-17 mm long, multicoloured, mostly yellow, red or orange, with some yellow, red or orange spots, streaks or blotches; claws present; standard 13.5-14 mm long, glabrous, not auriculate, wings 13-13.7 mm long, not auriculate, keel 13.5-14 mm long, not beaked, not auriculate, glabrous. Stamens ten; anthers 0.5-0.6 mm long, at two different levels (filaments alternately long and short); filaments free (or united at the very base) or united in an open sheath with one free stamen, 7.5-13 mm long. Ovary stipitate or sessile or subsessile, hairy or glandular; style 12.5-13 mm long, hairy or glandular towards the base, not bearded, terete. Fruit dehiscent (a pod or follicle), stipitate or sessile or subsessile, not constricted between the seeds, round in cross-section, not beaked. Flowers in September, October and November.
