Scientific Description

Erect, herb. Stems terete, not spiny, glabrous; pustules or glands absent. Leaves or phylloclades clearly present, compound, alternate, continuous with stem, 20-40 mm long, flat with flat margins; margins entire, leaflets 7-11, pinnately arranged, terminal leaflet present, stalked. Stipules present and persistent to older leaves, 5-6 mm long, without glands, ribless. Bracteoles present and persistent. Corolla uniformly coloured, blue. Stamens ten. Fruit dehiscent (a pod or follicle), 45-55 mm long, 5-8 mm wide, stipitate, not constricted between the seeds, round in cross-section, glabrous. Flowers in April, June and August. Occurs in the Eremaean Botanical Province, in the Pilbara IBRA regions. Conservation Code Priority Three (P3).

Swainsona thompsoniana R.W.Davis & P.J.H.Hurter is described here as new. An amendment to an existing key for Swainsona Salisb. is provided to account for S. thompsoniana. Swainsona thompsoniana occurs on cracking clay soils from east of Pannawonica to Mount Florence Station and south-east to Tom Price and Wittenoom; a distribution map is included.
