Scientific Description

Habit and structure. Thallus with prostrate and erect leaf-like branches to 2 cm long, attached by a primary holdfast and at several points by clustered rhizoids arising from the blade margins. Branching up to 3 orders; branches arising from the midline, on one surface, alternately or unilaterally every 9–11 axial cells but with occasional intercalation of secondary branches. Additional branches arising from the basal segment of parent axes, giving the appearance of subopposite branches. Blades linear-lanceolate, to 1.5 mm wide, with attenuate apices. Structure with all cells of second-order rows bearing third-order rows.

Reproduction. Spermatangia in discrete sori on both sides of the midline, often from individual cells of alae, occasionally becoming confluent. Tetrasporangia spherical, tetrahedrally divided, 60–70 µm diam., in elongate sori over the midline, the lateral pericentral cells involved in sporangial production.

Distribution. This species is possibly widespread in tropical seas.
