Rhizomatous, soliniferous, tussocky perennial, grass-like or herb, 0.1-0.5 m high. Fl. green-purple, Jan to Dec. White, yellow or brown sand, clay, peat, often saline. Beach dunes, tidal flats, salt marshes.
