Monoecious, rhizomatous, tufted perennial, grass-like or herb (sedge), 0.18-1 m high, to 1 m wide, forming loose clumps. Fl. purple-brown-black, Jul to Nov. Grey clayey sand, lateritic gravel, red clay. Swamps, seepages.
