Erect annual, herb, to 0.5 m high. Fl. purple-red, May to Jul. Sandy soils, alluvium, sandstone. In gullies.

Scientific Description

Annuals, stems single, more or less prostrate or more or less erect, glabrescent or glabrous, with nodose hairs. Leaves present, 8-40 mm long, 0.8-2 mm wide, glabrescent or glabrous, with nodose hairs; basal rosette absent; cauline leaves alternate. Spikes magenta, ovoid or cylindrical, clustered, with densely arranged flowers. Bracts 1.2-1.5 mm long, colourless, glabrous or hairy, awned or mucronate, with an obscure or a prominent midrib. Bracteoles 0.9-1.2 mm long, colourless, glabrous, awned or mucronate or not awned or mucronate, with an obscure midrib. Outer tepals 3.2-4 mm long, entire. Inner tepals 3.4-4.2 mm long, glabrous within. Style 1-1.2(-1.3) mm long, straight, centrally fixed to ovary. Seeds (1.1-)1.2-1.3 mm long, glossy, brown. Distribution: Northern Botanical Region; IBRA regions: Northern Kimberley.
